Description:

Load bus at 7:30 a.m., depart at 8:00.

What better way to spend a rainy spring day than with a trip to the museum. We head to McMinnville to tour the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, home to Howard Hughes’ “Spruce Goose.” the world’s largest wooden flying boat. We will take a guided tour and enjoy an IMAX big screen movie. Bring a sack lunch to eat outside or purchase lunch in the museum’s cafe. Afterward we head to the Woodburn/Mt. Angel area where, depending on time, interest, and the weather, we will view the tulip fields, Mount Angel Abbey, and/or Bauman’s Farm. We hope to arrive back at Shopko around 5:30 pm.

Trip Report

Eighteen Obsidians and guests drove the back roads between Salem and McMinnville to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. We toured the "Spruce Goose," saw replicas of the Wright Brothers' Flyer and Charles Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis," and, for some of us, took in an IMAX movie. There was much to see. We could have spent another hour or two at the museum, but we didn't want to miss the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival east of Woodburn. The tulips were at their peak, in brightly colored rows. One rider commented that she had been to the tulip festival five times and this was the best she had seen the flowers. With time running short, we skipped the Mt. Angel Abbey and headed back to Eugene. All in all, it was a great day in the northern valley. Aviation enthusiasts and flower lovers included:
