Description:

Departs from: Springfield, Winco Parking lot, I-105/Mohawk. Across street from Starbucks in the Winco Parking Lot. 1920 Olympic Street, Springfield. This gives us easy access to get on I-105, take Mohawk exit to Marcola, Mohawk Valley and to Sweet Home. It is another 21 miles on Highway 20 to the Trout Creek Trailhead and the Menagerie Wilderness (established1984). It will be a moderate steady pace for the uphill hike. It will be like hiking Mt. Pisgah twice with few stops. From the junction with the old climbers' trail, it climbs 750' in the last half mile. From the top, there is a view east and we should see Hen Rock, Turkey Monster, and Chicken Rock hidden in the rugged terrain. Rooster Rock, where the lookout once stood, has historic will probably reschedule if heavy rain is predicted. See photos from previous trips in The Trip Reports (Homepage)

Trip Report

The steep Trout Creek Trail to Rooster Rock in the Menagerie Wilderness is 21 miles east of Sweet Home. After a steady uphill trudge, Rooster Rock is always a welcome sight as one nears the rocky summit where a base cabin for a fire lookout on top of Rooster Rock's pinnacle once stood. Clouds and mist prevented us from viewing Rabbit Ears' twin 260-foot pillars. Instead we enjoyed the parade of calypso orchids along the narrow trail as we brushed against dripping plants and bushes. I recommend gaiters for a wet hike on the first day of May.
