Description:

The North Bank Habitat is south of Eugene, exit 135, Wilbur. The drive takes around 1 hour. There is a new parking lot with a bathroom at the trailhead. The loop boundary ridge hike takes one up and down more than several times on rolling(some steep & challenging) hills/ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, and views of the Umpqua River. One can easily avoid the plentiful poison oak at this time of year. Expect a few sections of the trail to be really muddy. We should start hiking around 9:15 and complete the hike by 2:00. It could be a late lunch so bring some snacks. It is a moderate to difficult hike. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice. If weather conditions are not optimal, I’ll reschedule. A map of the area is in Sullivan’s Southern Oregon hiking book. Optional stop at Rice Hill for ice cream.

Trip Report

A rainy weather forecast prompted us to switch our hike from the North Bank Habitat to Mt. Pisgah. A plethora of wildflowers were bright spots on our 2 1/2 hour hike in light rain. Our summit hike included the Incense Cedar Trail, Buford Trail and Trail 35. Checkered lilies and monkey flower were the surprise flower attractions.
