Trip Report

Our two-hour loop walk from Eugene Masonic Cemetery to the Obsidian Lodge and Hendricks Park offered shade making it easy for us stop and share stories about Eugene history and Memorial Day traditions. We had time to stroll the cemetery paths before we gathered at the Public Square at noon to listen to the melodic, sorrowful Taps played by trumpeter, Barry Barreau. Obsidian member, Karen Seidel, representing the Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association welcomed us at Hope Abbey Mausoleum with a patriotic cake made by the SEHS culinary students. Of interest was the monument for Karl Kordesch, the inventor of the alkaline battery. My thirteen curious and cheerful companions including Jorry's sister, Mabby, from Boston contributed so much to our Memorial Day outing.
