Trip Report

Departing from the LCC parking lot at 9:00, our first stop was the Cottage Grove Visitors Center/Library. The Library Director opened the doors early to give us a quick tour and show us the Opal Whiteley statue. With Doreen Steggell 's expert navigating skills using the map in "Oregon Townscape Walks" by Tyler Burgess and with local resident, Mike King's anecdotes, our walk in the historic area couldn't have been better. The restored Chamber Covered Railroad Bridge on River Road was amazing! Returning to Main Street we stopped at the Opal Whiteley mural and at the beginning of the Row Trail where "The General" was filmed with Buster Keaton. At 11:30 the two brothers at The Backstage Bakery and Cafe welcomed us, shared some tips about the homemade menu selections and were so efficient! Mike recommended we stop at Sanity Chocolate where the owner explained the process of changing the pods into tasty chocolate bars and other goodies. Next stop was the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum where Craig, a volunteer, delighted us with stories about mining. We were back at LCC around 2:15. What a wonderful day with curious and happy Obsidians! There were requests for another "city" exploration.
