Description:

WEATHER UPDATE:***Sunday evening--There is a 50% chance of rain Monday with a high in the mid to upper 40s. I keep forgetting that what passes for rain here is continuous stratiform precipitation, not amount, which is progged to be a meager (my words) <0.1 inch, if that. There may be wind, so be sure to have good layers, with gloves and a good hat available. You may be standing around both on the hike and at the cone, where it is likely to be windy.

This is the 3rd annual Clare Tucker Memorial Hike to Four and One Cone. Clare Tucker led this for 14 years. It is a 3 mile gradual uphill to the volcanic area where there are two long sections in the volcanic rock followed by a more open woods and finally the Cone. We plan to have lunch on the Cone and there should be time for people to see all four vents. It's a moderate hike, but it is a solid 11.5 miles.
Goal of hike: Safe way to view the four vents which exploded 1800 years ago. Want time to have lunch and to see the cone. Moderate steady pace while hiking (2.5-3 mph).
No stream crossings, no water. The volcanic part of the trail is not a good place to fall.

Also note:***On my hikes, there is no deliberate feeding of animals allowed. We will also do our best to abide by Leave No Trace.***

Trip Report

We had a drizzly day up in the Cascades to visit Four and One Cone, a hike that Clare Tucker led for 14 years, last in 2013. We were able to get up and walk on the rim, but the views were mostly of clouds, and we elected to eat lunch down in the woods. It was good to see puddles on the trail and the wet woods. Nobody got too wet or cold, and we saw nice autumn colors on the drive as well as the hike. Some autumn colors on bushes were enhanced by raindrops. Hopefully, some photographs will follow! It was a good group to lead.
