Trip Report

Bugaboo Ridge to Bachelor Mountain on an early summer day is a hike with a whole lot of bang. We set out on a lovely morning with all the elements for a terrific hike; blue skies with fluffy white clouds, a warm gentle breeze and a group of enthusiastic Obsidians. As we climbed gradually to the ridge line, we caught glimpses of Mount Jefferson and the distinctive angles of Three Finger Jack, giving us a hint of the spectacular views to come. Along the way we saw an impressive array of wildflowers, which Keiko identified for us. She made note of over forty-five varieties, including Arnica, Blue Gila, Corn Lily, Marsh Marigold, and Oregon Sunshine among the many other gems. Once up on the ridge the views opened up and we stopped to take in the skyline from the Three Sisters to the south to Mount Jefferson looming up close. Purple, yellow and blue flowers blanketed the valley below us and grew between the rocks in the formations above us. After reentering the trees, we turn from the Bugaboo trail onto the Bachelor Mountain trail to make the final climb to the 5,900 foot summit. During lunch on Bachelor Mountain we admired the views and searched for Grizzly Peak, Coffin Mountain and other Obsidian favorite hikes.
This is a wonderful bug free hike for early summer while the wildflowers are in full bloom and there is a cool breeze on Bugaboo Ridge.
