Description:

Departure place : Springfield Safeway at Pioneer Plaza on West Q street on the west side.
We will drive up Marcola Road through Mohawk Valley to Sweet home, then 34 miles Highway 20 to Deer Creek Trailhead, FS Road 15 near milepost 63. Our loop hike begins by walking 1.2 miles to Tombstone Pass and the Cone Peak Trailhead. It is around 4.6 miles with ups and downs to the platform on the summit. The last mile to the summit is narrow with steep switchbacks. From the top, it is around 2 miles downhill back to our cars. The pace will be moderate with time to stop to enjoy the colorful landscapes of flowers. The early departure is to avoid the crowds and to have plenty of time to reach the summit around 12 :30 where we will have lunch. Although it is not a “close up” flower identification hike, we will be sharing the names of flowers. I was there on June 22 and the flower packed fields were amazing.
