Phantom Orchid Hike

Description:

Meet at the Spencer Butte Trailhead, the paved parking lot. We will hike up the main trail to the Meadow Intersection(first intersection) and then start downhill for around 10-15 minutes to the place where the rare phantom orchids appear each year. Retracing our steps uphill back to the intersection and then down to the parking lot. I'm not sure about the elevation gain.
Optional is to hike the 1/2 mile to the summit adding several 100 feet to the elevation gain. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions.

Trip Report

We departed from the Spence Butte Trailhead to walk up to the Meadow Junction and then down the Tie Trail to to the sharp switchback where we saw the phantom orchids hiding quietly up in the greenery. We opted not to go to the summit. The parking lot was almost full when we returned to our cars. I recommend an early start and possibly car pooling if hiking form the main trailhead on the week-end.
