Description:

Meeting Place: Pioneer Plaza /Safeway on W Q street . West side of parking lot.
The early departure is to avoid the crowds and possibly afternoon hot temperatures. It is an hour drive up Mohawk Valley to Sweet Home. Then we head east up Highway 20 around 35 miles to Deer Creek Trailhead for the loop hike to Cone Peak Trail and the lookout where we will have lunch. Moderate pace with stops to view the flowers. It is not a flower identification hike nor is it a race. If the .9 mile trail from 4800 ft to 5455 ft to the lookout looks a bit too much, there is a bench where you can wait. If questions, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net. There is a toilet at Deer Creek parking lot. If high temperatures are a problem, we can make adjustments to shorten the hike.

Trip Report

Our 7:30 early departure combined with taking Civil Road #035 to the upper trailhead gave us a headstart to beat the predicted soaring temperatures. We started hiking around 9:20 and were on the summit platform by 10:30. The flowers, a bit wilted, and the views of the major Cascade peaks were impressive. We continued on the loop trail until we voted for an early lunch and then headed back to our cars. Vickie and Jean on their first hike to Iron Mountain were more than satisfied with the shortened trip. On the way back three of us made a quick visit to to House Rock Campground to view the historical cave, a "cool" stop for travelers on the Santiam Wagon Road.
