Description:

This is a good first trip of the year for experienced skiers. We'll leave from Gold Lake Sno-Park, ski in the flat road to Pengra Pass, then head over to the PCT. Here the trail makes a steady climb through the trees until it levels out for the stretch to Midnight Lake, where we'll stop for a snack or early lunch with the gray jays. From there we'll continue in a clockwise direction on the rolling terrain over to Abernethy Road and Bechtel Shelter, for another potential break. From there, it's a long downhill glide back to Pengra Pass and back to the Sno-Park.

The route might be altered if necessary due to snow conditions, but will remain comparable in length and difficulty.

Trip Report

With misgivings because the forecast rain/snow had mostly bypassed Lane County, but with hopes fed by reports that the snow was "not bad", seven skiers headed up to Gold Lake Sno-Park. To our utter delight, we found wonderful snow for a quick climb up to Midnight Lake. It was early for lunch, so we paused for a quick look at the lake and photo, and noticed that there were no gray jays at this popular lunch spot that has typically been mobbed with the lunch robbers in the past. We continued through perfect snow through the rolling hills over to Abernethy Road, and down to Bechtel Shelter for a quick lunch stop. From there it was a smooth glide down to Pengra Pass and back out to the Sno-Park--and back to Eugene by 2:30 for a great pre-Christmas ski trip.
