Trip Report

The snoozing elderly groundhog in a fallen log in the Masonic Cemetery went unnoticed while Obsidian hikers walked by. A replay was needed—Let’s walk by that log again. One hiker was bamboozled and hurried to find her camera. Since three hikers had never been to the cemetery, we took a quick tour of the historic gravestones and admired the bright snowdrops and crocuses. We missed finding Ruth and John Bascom Spencer Butte columnar basalt memorial gravestone only to find out that we were so close when we stopped at the Thomas Condon monument. From there it was a steady uphill push to the Ribbon Trail and Hendricks Park. By then Whitney’s rendition of the song, Where’s the Bathroom from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend had a sympathetic audience. Elizabeth Koch, a Hendricks Park volunteer, shared highlights of the Rhododendron Garden. After two hours of hiking, we were at Hey Neighbor Pizza when they turned on the OPEN sign at 11:00. With our glasses filled with water, we toasted our favorite groundhog and then ordered pizza. Groundhog trivia: young groundhogs are called chucklings.
