DEPARTURE PLACE: Masonic Cemetery NW gate, at 25th & Miami Lane. Park on 25th, or take the bus or Rideshare bike.

This leisurely walk is mostly off-pavement, on trails, noticing signs of fall/winter, birds, mushrooms, scents, silence, peace... We will saunter through the Masonic Cemetery, Laurelwood Golf course, Ribbon Trail, Hendricks Park, native plant garden, meandering trails, then along Fairmount Blvd back to start.

Trip Report

14 hikers spent a relaxing morning in the RAIN, following meandering trails through a cemetery, golf course, and urban forest. Our goal was to use all our senses to discover something new in nature. We tasted feral apples - they were bitter, smelled pink camellia blossoms - sweet, and found licorice ferns unfurling fresh fronds. We learned that Disappointing Violet is a native plant, that a leafless bush with purple bead clusters is called American Beauty Berry, and that a dying Madrone tree can be turned into a handsome sculpture supporting a house number. We gathered around a swing in the Rhododendron garden for a group photo, and made our way back to the Masonic cemetery through the Fairmount neighborhood. We did not see any turkeys today...
