Description:

Load Bus at 7:30 AM
For a small town, Cottage Grove has a lot to offer. Did you know that Cottage Grove is the covered bridge capital of Oregon, with six covered bridges? At the Chambers Railroad Bridge, we will read interpretative exhibits describing Cottage Grove’s lumber mills and logging industry. At the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum, we will learn about the 1863 gold rush. The Cottage Grove Museum, located in an octagonal-shaped former church, contains hundreds of historical artifacts. Cottage Grove was the location of Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film classic, The General; Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine in the 1973 film, Emperor of the North; the parade scene in the cult comedy, Animal House; and the railroad track portions of the 1986 coming-of-age film, Stand by Me. We will view many beautiful murals, including one of Opal Whitely, Cottage Grove’s most famous citizen, who you likely never heard of.

Lunch is on your own at one of several restaurants and brew pubs in the historic downtown. Or bring a sack lunch to eat in the park. Sometime after lunch we will visit Sanity Chocolate to learn about the process of making chocolate. Bring extra cash to purchase some of the shop’s delicacies. We will top off the trip with a scenic tour around Dorena Lake to view most of the covered bridges.

Trip Report

Twenty-seven Obsidians and guests departed the former Shopko parking lot in our luxurious motor coach for historic Cottage Grove. Along the way we detoured to view the new Hayward Field construction and other campus construction projects. We travelled down East Amazon Drive to see the new "cycle track" pathway for bicycles. Then it was over Dillard Road to Creswell for coffee and pastries at the Creswell Bakery. We met Obsidian Verlean McCoy, president of the Creswell Heritage Foundation, for a tour of the ongoing renovations of the historic Creswell Schoolhouse, located across the street from the bakery. While traveling Highway 99 to Cottage Grove, Obisidian John Jacobsen played a DVD he excerpted from Buster Keaton's silent movie, "The General," filmed in Cottage Grove in 1926. John's humorous narration of the train chase and bridge collapse added to our enjoyment. Museum guide Tara Sue showed us the antiques and treasures at the Cottage Grove Museum, including the coat from a Titanic survivor. We posed for a group photo in front of the steam engine sculpture at the Chambers covered railroad bridge. Obsidian and soon-to-be centenarian Ethel Allen regaled us with stories from her childhood in Cottage Grove in the 1920s."Museum guide and miner Craig demonstrated gold panning at the Bohemia Mining Museum. John Jacobsen panned up a few gold flakes, but not enough to buy us lunch. "Sanity Chocolate" store owner Mike Caven explained how chocolate is made before selling us his handmade craft chocolates. We viewed many of the 21 scenic murals, including one commemorating Cottage Grove's most famous resident, the author, lecturer, and naturalist Opal Whiteley. Lunch was at several restaurants along the historic Main Street. We finished the day with a tour around Dorena Lake to view four additional covered bridges in this "Covered Bridge Capital of the West," then headed back to Eugene. Special thanks to Obsidian and Cottage Grove resident Michael King for joining the tour and providing color commentary.
