Description:

Load Bus 7:30 AM, depart 8:00 AM
Portland’s Chinatown is our October destination. Located in "Old Town" are the remnants of a thriving Chinese community dating back to the 1870s. At one time it was the second largest Chinatown in the United States. This is an Oregon history story that we'll experience at the new Chinese Museum opened in December, 2018. We'll also tour the beautiful and culturally inspiring Lan Su Chinese Garden. Lunch (included) will be at the nearby Golden Horse restaurant. We will look for the old underground tunnels and imagine the stories to be told. Businesses, family associations and underground illegal activity thrived. In recent times, with gleaming new developments happening in the "Old Town" historic district, the Chinese community is moving to 82nd street on the east side of Portland. We'll return to Eugene via the east side and down Hwy 99.

Trip Report

After forty-seven signups and nineteen cancellations we finally got on the road with twenty-eight cheerful travelers for our Chinese History Portland trip. We had a full agenda; with cloudy skies, fifty degree temperatures and a threat of rain. The rain held off while we enjoyed our coffee break at the Santiam rest area. Coffee, cookies, brownies and fruit were supplied by the bus committee. As we traveled north we enjoyed a PBS movie “Portland NOIR”, a Chinese history story about early Chinese settlers. Vern supplied popcorn for all as an extra treat. Upon arrival in Portland we passed through the China Gate at 4th and Burnside, arriving at the Chinese History Museum at our assigned time for a private tour. We were greeted by our tour guides, Executive Director Jackie Pierson-Lomis Ph.D. and Jennifer Fang Ph.D. After dividing into two groups we were given an excellent forty-five minute tour through the museum which has just undergone a major renovation. Then it was off to lunch at the Golden Horse Restaurant for a delicious family style lunch featuring eight separate delightful and tasty dishes. Following lunch most of our riders walked to the Chinese Gate for a group photo op. Others remained at the bus until time to check in at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. Although the garden is not a flower garden there are many beautiful shrubs, “sanctuaries” and a small Koi pond with several small bridges. Leaving the garden we traveled to 82nd Street looking for another China Gate on the east side of town. Unsuccessful in this adventure, we headed for home and enjoyed another PBS movie “Massacre at Hells Canyon”. We arrived back in Eugene about 5:30 after a full day of fun.
