Trip Report

Purple mountains majesty with a few glaciers and patches of snow; U-shaped glaciated valleys; straddling the Continental Divide at Logan Pass; turquoise lakes in steep sided cirques; waterfalls galore; black and grizzly bears, moose, deer, big horned sheep, mountain goats, and a swimming shrew; at least 15 varieties of flowers in bloom; delicious thimble and huckleberries; and bright night skies with millions of stars - all contributed to a fabulous Summer Camp exploring the “Crown Jewel” of the national parks! Clear, sunny skies with temperatures in the low to mid-70’s made hiking very enjoyable… and the 45 mile per hour wind gusts on the Piegan Pass to Many Glacier Hotel hike were very memorable! The food, especially the lasagna and berry cobblers with whipped cream, were delicious. Having a pavilion to hang out in and making new friends during meals was gratifying. And hearing Jan A explain the 10 essentials of a stylish purse/first aid kit to Lyndell during the President’s tea was hilarious! What an outstanding summer camp!

I particularly appreciated the lead Obsidians who worked extra hard and long to be sure that food and drinks were served timely and cleaned up, dishes were washed, and the garbage was properly thrown out. Thank you very, very much:

Twenty-seven Obsidians led a variety of hikes during camp; many led more than one. They ranged from strolls through wetlands to modest 5-7 mile hikes to challenging 13 milers involving a shuttle. Many hiked at least part of the Highline Trail and at least a dozen drove to Canada to hike to Crypt Lake. Thanks awesome leaders for doing the research and being willing to coordinate exploring this very special place.

I truly appreciate everyone’s efforts and commitments which resulted in an exceptional Summer Camp in a very special place!!! See related articles for additional information.
