Trip Report

Our 8:00 departure gave us plenty of time to park near the Salem Riverfront Park to start our walk at 9:30 with Jim Northrop through the State Capitol Park to the oldest building on the Capitol Mall, the Supreme Court Building. On the second floor Lewis Zimmerman, Oregon State Law Library reference librarian, shared interesting historical anecdotes and then guided us up to third floor to the Supreme Court courtroom to see the beautiful, golden stained–glass skylight. www.osbar.org/publications/bulletin/05augsep/heritage. We then dashed to the Capitol for our 11:00 guided tour up to the Golden Pioneer Observation Deck. Jim continued the tour with a visit to the House Chambers and a viewing of the governor’s portraits. After lunch at La Margarita Mexican Restaurant, Jim arranged for us to visit the Elsinore Theater built in 1924. We then followed him through a maze of paths, gardens, flower displays, and city streets to Willamette University, Deepwood Estate and Gardens, Bush Barn Art Center, and the historic Ladd and Bush Bank. The last stop was the new Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge where we paused to enjoy the sunny day and Jim’s famous cookies. Jim’s unique introduction to Salem’s history and beauty was much appreciated especially for those on their first visit. The only disappointment was that the cherry blossoms were not yet in full bloom. We left Salem at 3:30 and didn’t mind that it rained on our way home.
