Trip Report

The group met staff members Elizabeth Goward and Crister LaBrecque on the Green Island property managed by the McKenzie River Trust for a three-mile walk. We learned how and why these former agricultural fields owned by the Green family are being converted to floodplain forest, enhancing the natural river flow processes. Over 60,000 native trees and shrubs are planted with more to come. Fish such as salmon, bass and chub are reappearing in recently connected backwater channels and through former gravel quarries. Beavers and other creatures are discovering refuge in this restored habitat. Nineteen species of birds were seen by Randy. On June 1, 2019 from 7am to 4pm at their Get Outdoors Day event, you may explore this property too—preregistration required.
