Description:

We'll meet at the north end of the Green Way Bridge in the Valley River parking lot. This is a leisurely hiking and birding trip around Delta Ponds. In 2018 we identified 24 bird species and a couple early blooming wildflower species. We saw one pair of Canada geese with goslings. This is a leisurely outing that takes about 3 hours. The more pairs of eyes in the group the more species we'll spot.

Trip Report

The ten people who joined me for this morning outing made it a real joy. The weather cooperated with part sun and part clouds without a drop of rain. Last week's high water had diminished enough that all the paths we used were dry. I imagine that some of the goose nests were inundated as we didn't see any goslings. We enjoyed seeing so many current bushes in bloom. We didn't see as many species of ducks because the high water levels has given them so many areas to visit. We saw double-crested cormorants, Canada geese, a male wood duck, osprey, mallards, turkey vultures, great blue herons, crows, Anna's hummingbirds, scrub jays, violet-green swallows, black-capped chickadees, bushtits, robins, spotted towhees, song sparrows, white-crowned sparrows, green-winged teals, lesser scaups, gadwalls, and red-winged blackbirds. That gave us at least twenty-one species.

We returned to our starting point at about noon.
