Description:

Easy walk along the Leaburg canal starting at the power station 13 miles east of Thurston. This level path follows the canal approximately 3 miles east with pleasant views of the surrounding farms, river, side creeks, and canal. Expect to see a variety of waterfowl. The path is covered in small pea gravel and is generally not muddy, but due to the gravel, you may find hiking boots more comfortable than a soft-soled shoe.

Trip Report

We had an absolutely perfect, beautiful fifth day of spring for our hike along the Leaburg Canal between the power transfer station and the western edge of Leaburg. Blue sky, moderate temperatures, and calm air made the walk very pleasant. We enjoyed sightings of numerous waterfowl both in the canal and the air, as well as views of the Cascade foothills to the east still sporting large patches of snow. Even though this path parallels highway 126, for most of the walk rural acreage and farms buffered us from noticing the road traffic.
