Description:

This trip is one I did last year. It has a series of three water falls you pass as you hike the loop trail. The last one is the most impressive. If the weather is good we may include a side trip to Ankeny Wildlife Refuge on the way back. We will be driving up I-5 to the exit for Hwy. 22 and following that east to our trailhead. Ankeny uses the same exit headed west and is very close. You might include binoculars just in case. N

Trip Report

Shellburg Falls, 24 miles east of Salem on North Santiam Highway 22 near Mehama, is in the Santiam State Forest on Shellburg Creek. The falls plunge 100 feet over a basalt ledge creating a recess for the trail to go behind the falls. Recent rain meant that the falls had a spectacular flow. The loop hike also includes Lower Shellburg Falls. Our group enjoyed the spring hike and that the rain in Eugene didn’t follow us north.
