Description:

This hike will take us up to the Collier Glacier viewpoint which I consider one of the most scenic spots in the Three Sisters Wilderness. I'm going to do this hike a bit differently this year. We'll be starting at the Matthieu Lakes trailhead to the PCT which will take us all the way to Opie Dilldock pass. From there we'll take a short unmaintained trail to the viewpoint for our lunch. We'll hike out the same trail except we'll take the short loop trail that goes past North Matthieu Lake. This is an early season hike so we could have some snow.

Trip Report

Mild temperatures, a light scattering of mosquitoes, and mostly sunny sky's greeted the 12 hikers who signed up for this Friday hike. We started our hike from the Matthieu Lakes trailhead where we connected to the PCT and headed South. Along the way we encountered many PCT through hikers including some from Australia, New Zealand, and even one from Sweden who had been hiking on a diet of olive oil and mayonnaise. All of us enjoyed the swarms of hundreds of California Tortoise Butterflies along the trail. When we reached the flank of Yapoah Crater five of our group decided to take a few minutes to scramble up the side to take in the view from the top. We reached our goal of Collier Glacier viewpoint at about 12:30 where we had our lunch and enjoyed the views that extended all the way to Mt Adams. When it was time to head back Leo, a non-member on our hike, exclaimed “I Don't Want to Leave!” which expressed how we all felt while at this incredible viewpoint next to the North Sister. After the hike eight of our group elected to stop at Tokoda's restaurant in Rainbow for a meal and cool drinks where we talked about upcoming Obsidian trips.
