Trip Report

As the highest mountain in Oregon, Mount Hood dominates the skyline for miles and provides countless opportunities for adventure. Lakes, streams and waterfalls abound on the mountain and in the surrounding forests.
Our first day we explored the northeast side of Hood on the Cooper Spur trail. Starting out at Tilly Jane trailhead, we hiked above Polallie Canyon to a stone shelter for lunch. From there above the tree line we had spectacular close up views of Eliot Glacier as well as sightings of Mount Adams and Rainier in the distance. We continued to climb the rocky switchbacks, with the more ambitious among us making it up to Tie-in Rock, a large boulder at over 8,400 ft elevation.
Our second day we explored the wildflower meadows at Cairne Basin. We hiked along Vista Ridge through a burn area covered with ripe huckleberries, crossed Ladd creek on logs, and enjoyed the lovely green meadows and brilliant wildflowers at Eden Park and Cairne Basin. We stopped at a sweet small creek at Wy East Basin to kick back and cool off before heading back down Vista Ridge.
On our last day we hike through green forest to lovely Lower Twin Lake for lunch and swimming.
