Description:

Canyon Creek Meadows offers an initially easy access to Cascade Alpine wildflower meadows plus great views of Three Fingered Jack. We will begin the hike at Jack Lake on a loop. Because of the many wildflower enthusiast that the trail is shared with we will go clockwise. After 1.7 miles at the lower meadow we will take a spur trail to the upper meadow and to the view point saddle another 1.5 miles. Some scrambling will be required. This part of the trip is on an unmaintained trail and can be difficult in places however the last time we were there we were rewarded with some close-up views of mountain goats.

Trip Report

Canyon Creek Meadows is another area that was impacted by the 2003 B & B Complex Fire leaving about half of the hike through the bleached out remains of the fire however there's a whole new forest of mostly pine trees coming up. Our hikers started out on a cool but mostly sunny Friday morning that was unexpectedly mosquito free. As most of the snow had only recently melted it was a bit early for the majority of wildflowers. When we reached the top of the meadows to start our off-trail scramble up to the viewpoint one of our members decided to wait for our return there. The hike up to the viewpoint is steep and slippery although free of snow but gave us access to the spectacular views of the jagged spires of Three Fingered Jack and the Cascades. We could only see one mountain goat in the distance from the viewpoint however when we got back to Canyon Creek Meadows where we had lunch we were rewarded with a good sized heard on the rocks just above the meadow. On our hike out the group decided to take a side trip to Wasco Lake where two of our members jumped in for a cool but refreshing swim before returning to our vehicles for the long drive home.
