We will meet in Alton Baker Park by the restrooms, tour the Nobel Peace prize exhibit and then see a few of the Talking Stones on our walk to the UO. The focus of this trip is the Museum of Natural and Cultural History Condon Collection of Fossils. We will visit the lab where fossil collections from the field are analyzed and identified and also see the vault where rare fossils of ancient plants and animals of Oregon are stored. There are huge mastodon teeth as well as imprints of palm trees and tree ferns. Professor Greg Retallack will lead the museum tour. We will be joined by some Native Plant Society members.

Trip Report

The best part of this excursion for many of us was the walk from Alton Baker Park to the U of O, Department of Earth Sciences, Cascade Hall on a fairly sunny fall afternoon. The plan was to view some of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History Condon Collection of Fossils housed in that building. We were joined by Native Plant Society members who doubled the size of the group. As a result, it was very challenging to hear Professor Greg Retallack or see the fossils he was talking about. However, it was interesting to just get a feel for the thousands of fossils (many collected in Oregon) in the collection, both in administrative offices and in the vault. Thanks to all the participants for their graciousness in accepting the situation.
