Description:

As of 10:00 pm Wednesday night, we are meeting at Dorene's home to car pool. Call me if you sign up so we can make arrangements to car pool. Snow conditions on road or trail may change our destination, perhaps only hiking one of the mountains or substituting a lower elevation hike. It is a two hour drive - Highway 22, past Santiam Y junction- 12.7 miles, and then left on Straight Creek Rd for 4.1 miles, gravel Rd 1168 for 3.8 miles, Rd 450 with immediate Coffin Mt. Lookout trailhead. It is 1.5 miles with elevation of 1020 ft. up to the lookout with beautiful views of mountains. Plan on lunch #1. Back at the trailhead, we will drive up Rd 1168 for .7 miles, park our cars, and walk 2 miles up to Bachelor Mountain, 1115 ft. We will have lunch#2 at the top where we will can look down into the Coffin and have even better views of Mt. Jefferson. Both of these are ridge hikes with continuous views of fall color and mountains. If you want to meet us in east Springfield, email me jbjacobsen@comcast.net

Trip Report

A little snow on the trail and road, 40 degree temperature, and fierce winds did not bother us from enjoying the sunny day and the views of the crystal clear snow capped mountains. Nearly blowing us off the mountain, the wind persuaded us to abandon our hike to nearby Bachelor Mountain. Instead we slowly drove for 80 minutes down the twisty, beautiful fall colored Quartzville Back Country Byway to Highway 20—not to be repeated. Shedding a few layers of clothing, our last stop was a much warmer and greener hike to Soda Creek Falls at Cascadia Park where we had to carefully scrambled up the muddy bank under fallen trees. Thanks to Richard for driving—the hardest part of the trip!
