Description:

Departure place is Doris Ranch by the bathrooms.
The 7.8 mile loop hike to discover Oregon State symbols starts at Doris Ranch with stops at Willamette Heights Park, the Simpson Mural and the Oregon Trail Mural. We will continue our loop on the Mill Race and Middle Fork Path.
Bring an Oregon trivia fact or your favorite Oregon Governor or a question which we can share at various sunny stops along the way. The fifth annual birthday hike should take around 3 hours. Perhaps lunch at Public House or Mezza Luna.
Optional. You can shorten the walk by returning to Doris Ranch from downtown Springfield.

Trip Report

Our fifth annual celebration of Oregon’s birthday started at the Doris Ranch where we shared Oregon trivia before heading up to Willamette Heights Park to see the totem pole. Then it was downhill to the Simpson Mural, the Oregon Trail Mural, and Springfield City Hall. Our pace picked up on the Springfield Mill Race Path and Middle Fork Willamette Path but thanks to Keiko, we took time to watch these showstoppers—an egret, a turtle, and mergansers. We completed the loop in 3 ½ hours and headed quickly to the Public House for lunch where we met up with Pat Esch’s Friday bike group. Most surprising were the early signs of spring—the fawn lilies and ossoberry leafing out and that the restrooms at the Booth-Kelly Path trailhead were closed for the season.
