Description:

The hike will go on with the following changes:
Arrive, drop your money in the container, and I will sign you up.
Start hiking.
We can meet at the top.

Start down separately. What one does after the hike is....after the hike.

There should be nice wildflowers, including snow queens, visible. There are many spotted Towhees and Pacific wrens, too. Much is visible to those who hike alone. Enjoy it!!

If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions, email wintertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.
To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street.

My hikes are leave no trace and don't feed the animals. Pick up litter if you feel the urge. The Obsidians are responsible for parts of the trail!

Trip Report

This was the first Spencer Butte hike since "the day the world changed," which I called 12 March 2020. People came, I wrote "signed in" on the sheet, they dropped the money in a plastic bag I placed on the sidewalk, and they were then free to go. We had people leave over a 28 minute period, and we all met on top. I think we need to be better in dividing up if there are more than 10 people. On top, we need two groups well apart. Keep it 6 feet apart, not 3 or 4. And when it comes to starting down, we must have smaller groups. This is not only safer to prevent viral transfer, it makes passing the group almost impossible. I've noted that a lot over the last couple of year when the number hiking has increased.
