Description:

This hike will take us up to the Collier Glacier viewpoint above Opie Dilldock pass. We'll start at the Matthieu Lakes trailhead near Lave Camp Lake which connects to the PCT then goes to South Matthieu Lake. I plan on making a stop at Yapoah Crater for a quick trip to the top. We'll have lunch at the Collier Glacier viewpoint then return on the same trail taking the lower trail past North Matthieu Lake.

Participants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

Trip Report

I like to schedule this trip early in the season as the left over winter snow adds another dimension to the already spectacular views and it tends to keep the crowds down on this very popular trail. Our July 5th hike had plenty of blue skis, mountain views, and snow fields for the eight participants on this trip. We started our hike at the Matthieu Lake trailhead where we joined the PCT and hiked South 8 miles all the way to Opie Dilldock Pass. The weather cooperated with plenty of sunshine, a mild temperature, and a constant breeze which kept the mosquitoes away. Four of us reached our goal of the Collier Glacier viewpoint with it's great views of the North Sister while the remaining four decided that Opie Dilldock Pass was enough. On the hike out we all had some fun by sliding down the numerous snow banks. After another 8 miles on our return hike we arrived back at our trailhead at 5:45pm.
