Description:

This hike extends from the Tam McArthur Rim hike from Three Creeks Lake and continues all the way past The Broken Hand to No Name Lake which is nestled just below the West side of Broken Top. This was originally one of Sullivan's secret hikes that has since become well known and very popular for its spectacular alpine scenery. The trail was once an unmarked scramble but has recently become a signed path so don't expect solitude but the views are worth sharing. Also for those willing there will be the option of dinner in Sisters. This is an all day excursion.

Participants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

Trip Report

The hike to this 8000 foot high lake nestled in a moraine rimmed valley just below Broken Top is probably one of the more unique hikes in Oregon. I can't think of any other place in Oregon where you can find a lake in late July still mostly frozen over in such a beautiful setting. As spectacular as this lake is it apparently has been given the innocuous title of No-Name Lake. I prefer to call it Broken Top Lake. We began our hike at the Tam McArthur Rim trailhead from Three Creeks Lake. While the maintained trail ends at the viewpoint on Tam McArthur Rim a non-maintained trail continues along the rim towards the Broken Hand. While it is possible to scramble around the Broken Hand to reach the lake I've found it's much easier to follow a route that drops below the South side of the Broken Hand then head West towards Broken Top to a valley between the Broken Hand and Broken Top Lake. From here we followed the creek coming down from the moraine to reach this beautiful lake where our group of 12 had our lunch before heading back on the same route. While not one of the longer hikes we do it is one of the more tiring due to the high elevation and almost constant sun exposure.
