Description:

This hike starts out at the Pamelia Lake trailhead and so requires a special limited entry permit. At the time I requested the permit there was a group size limit of 10 people so that's what the permit was issued for. I'll need to collect an additional fee from each person of one dollar to cover the cost of the permit. This hike has a challenging 2700 foot climb to Grizzly Peak for a great close up view of Mt Jefferson where we'll have lunch. We'll return to our vehicles on the same trail.

Participants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

Trip Report

The 10 mile round trip hike up Grizzly Peak had several things going for it on this hot summer day. The first is that unlike our Red Butte hike a week earlier there was plenty of space to park in the lot. This is due to the fact that this is a limited entry permit area. Also it's one of the few hikes I've taken this summer that does not go through a recent burn area but instead is almost entirely through a mature and heavily shaded forest next to the rushing Pamelia Creek. While the hike to the summit is a taxing 2700 foot climb, the view of Mt Jefferson is probably the best close-up view that can be found making it a pleasant spot to have our lunch. Add in the great swim that most of our group of 10 had in Pamelia Lake after the summit and it's not surprising that this hike is an ideal destination for anyone looking for a satisfying summer outing.
