Description:

This trail starts out along Pamelia Creek to Pamelia lake. At 3.5 miles we cross a creek on logs then climb up to a ridge with views of Mt. Jefferson. We will lunch at Hanks lake with reflections of Jeff and views of Cathedral Rocks. This is a 12 mile and 2,150 ft elevation gain route. There is a difficult creek crossing between Hanks and Hunts lakes, which we may or may not do. If time permits and we can find the user trail that goes from Hanks lake to the PCT, we may go up for the good views above the lake, this would be a 14 mile 2,5000 day.

Participants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

Trip Report

The Obsidians backpacked to Hunts Cove in 1985 and 2011, but a search of our website does not show any reports of previous day hikes to Hunts. There is a lot to see on this hike: Pamelia Ck, Pamelia, Hanks and Hunts lakes, views of several peaks, the Cathedral Rocks and 10,497 foot Mount Jefferson. We had been monitoring for possible smoke coming in from Central Oregon fires*, fortunetly the winds blew in our favor. But, although the air quality was excellent, morning clouds hung in, obscuring the mountain views. Then as we were finishing lunch at Hunts Lk, the sun broke through. We decided to take advantage of the afternoon sunshine and hike up to the wonderful meadows beyond the cove. We took the unsigned, but easy to find and follow user trail from the north side of Hanks lk to the PCT. It is a steep 1.1 miles. But, the lovely, green. stream filled meadows are well worth the effort. I had the one surprise of the day while hiking alone on the trail between Hunts and Hank lk. I heard a nearby sound. I looked over and saw a large bear running away from me. * www.centraloregonfire.org/wildfire-smoke-air-quality-maps-2/
