Description:

Thurston Hills Natural Area parking lot of HWY 126 ( that’s just 2 miles east of HWY 126 / Main Street intersection.) This is a fairly new trail. Depending on signup this may work as a shuttle. The advantage of this trail is it very close in and you get a great hike in the woods.

Trip Report

To my surprise everyone showed up. Overcast day with threat of rain everyone seemed ready for whatever came. I want to point out there were 2 assistant leaders on this trip. Holger and Lana. Lana took out in the lead and Holger who very familiar with the trail system. It has improved a lot from when I first followed Denise Bean on an introduction hike when it first opened. A lot less mud for starters. We were able to stay on groveled trails for the most part. We came to a junction old jeep road and a narrow trail that disappeared into the weeds. I asked Holger which was less muddy he indicated the road. He was right less mud but straight up to the top of the butte. At this point I was going to turn group around and head back to cars. Lana, Richard and Jory decided to continue on and explore the trail connection to the Jasper Rd. trailhead. The rest chose to return to cars. As we turned to head down the trail it started raining heavily. Thanks to Holger we were able take a short cut and get back to cars a little faster. This is a great trail system and it appears to me that they are going to extend it over time.
