Description:

This is a good first-of-the-season trip for intermediate skiers (it's really not appropriate for beginners). We'll plan on heading up to Midnight Lake via the PCT, then following the trail through the woods over to the road past Bechtel Shelter, for a nice glide back to Pengra Pass and then the parking lot. Lunch will be at either Midnight Lake or at Bechtel Shelter. Depending on conditions, it could turn into an out-and-back instead of a loop (for instance, if it's icy under the trees). Trip will be cancelled or re-scheduled if snow conditions are inadequate.

Trip Report

The weather forecast had sounded much more promising a few days before the trip than it did on the day of, but five of us gamely headed up to Gold Lake Sno-Park and were rewarded with sunshine to start this first-of-the-season ski trip. It was a bit icy for climbing the short hills up to Midnight Lake, but not bad, and I've never seen such clear views of the nearby mountains and Willamette Pass Ski Area from this trail. We luxuriated at Midnight Lake for one of the most balmy, comfortable lunch trips I've ever had on a winter trip. The little hills in the middle section of the trip were a bit like a toboggan run, with fast trails through the woods. It was fun, and also gave us a chance to practice some of the finer points of cross-country skiing (like getting back up after falling). For the sake of social distancing, we skipped Bechtel Shelter, and enjoyed a quick glide down Abernethy Road, then chatted on the flat section back to the parking lot. It was a great trip, and we finished by 2 pm, for an easy drive back before the predicted heavy rains.
