Description:

UPDATE: Peg Straub will be the co-leader so we can take 12, breaking into two groups when needed on city streets or other venues to stay socially distanced and where we would impact others. It is hard to hear with masks so I want to keep the groups small. Departure place is Doris Ranch by the bathrooms. Celebrate Oregon’s Birthday. It became the 33rd state on Feb 14, 1859 making her 162 years old
The 7.8 mile loop hike on paved paths to discover Oregon State symbols starts at Doris Ranch with stops at Willamette Heights Park, the Simpson Mural and the Oregon Trail Mural. We will continue our loop on the Mill Race and Middle Fork Path.
Bring an Oregon trivia fact or your favorite Oregon Governor or a question which we can share at various sunny stops along the way. The sixth annual birthday hike should take around 3 hours. We should see early signs of spring. (Last year bathrooms were closed at Booth-Kelly Path trailhead.)

Optional. You can shorten the walk by returning to Doris Ranch from downtown Springfield.

Trip Report

We shared Oregon trivia at the Doris Ranch living history village before we headed up to Willamette Heights Park to see the views of the Willamette River across the valley to Spencer Butte. The totem pole with the beaver and salmon is sadly in need of repair. Then it was downhill to the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery Park where we took a back trail down to LTD bus station to see the The Sun mosaic mural and the Platform Garden. At the Ken Kesey mural, we studied the books titles that were part of Kesey's personal collection. Looking upward we could easily see the beaver on the back of the Oregon flag flying over the Springfield Library and also the Pioneer Museum. We had no problem finding another beaver in the Homer Simpson mural. Posing for a photo, a few us tried to push Homer out of his hammock. Oops! I forgot to take us by the Oregon Trail mural but instead we headed back to the Booth Kelly Trailhead to start the walk on the Mill Race Path. The highlight was an egret flying over and landing on the water. Thanks to Peg Straub who shared about Springfield and her father, Governor Bob Straub. Portable toilets at EMX bus station and on the trail were appreciated. The trip took three hours and fifteen minutes.
