Description:

Wildflower explora hike in Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park. Rolling hills, wildflowers and beautiful wide open area.
Some areas with Ticks and poison oak.

Trip Report

It was a chilly 42 degrees when 11 hikers were greeted at the parking lot by a flock of peacocks basking in the sun. We warmed up quickly as we hiked 4 loops radiating from a central stem: Oak Savannah (red), Fern Woods (purple), Underwood Hill (blue), and Mildred's Forest (green) The lengths ranged from 1.5 to 1.7 miles, but in typical Obsidian fashion we added mileage by exploring several unnamed trails including a marked "creek crossing" that would have required a swim. Each loop gained elevation and then circled back down--we had some lovely views. Wildflowers in bloom included buttercups, shooting stars, a few irises, fawn lilies, trillium, and Camas. Birds included the peacocks, bluebirds, a woodpecker, and turkey vultures. We all enjoyed exploring a new place on a lovely spring day.
