Trip Report

What an interesting two hours ambling in Alton Baker park with our resident naturalist, Rick Ahrens. As always, he was a fount of information and inspiration to learn more about the natural world. For example, did you know that female ducks lay one egg each day for 7-8 days and only then incubate them so that all the chicks hatch at the same time? Or that many birds are unihemispheric (a new word for me)? Or that when some migratory birds prepare for flights, their intestines and digestive organs actually shrink while their heart, lung and leg muscles can double in size? Or that newly sprouted maple leaf clusters are tasty in salad or fried with butter and garlic? If you want to learn more, sign up for the next "Birding in Alton Baker Park" hike! A big thanks to Rick for sharing his time and knowledge with the rest of us.
