Description:

It’s a little late in the season but we will e looking for birds. We will stop at 2 binds and do a 5 mile from the headquarters We will stop at headquarters to use bathrooms and check out feeders. Depending on timing we may have lunch there.

Trip Report

Late season bird trip. Once again it was noted how low water levels were in the refuge. I spite of that our first stop at Bruce Rd turned up a blind fill of swallow nests and although you could see little water in Cabell Pond the number of Great Blue Heron was impressive along with several Great White Egrets. The swallows eventually decided to ignore us and some came into the blind to feed their chicks and give use a close look. From there it was on to the long board walk. Not a lot of water and not a lot to see except people walking the levee road. The road to headquarters is closed so hike started at Woodpecker trail head. Taking the right leg of trail to shelter for a good view of valley, a great breeze and a dim view of Middle and North Sister. The day was warming up and the humidity in the woods was also rising. We stopped at headquarters to eat lunch no bathrooms and no food in the feeders. While one of us elected to hang out there the rest of us did the Mill Pond trail. The woods were lush and humid. We all were a little short on water. I sent group on to trailhead to complete hike and I picked up our one member at headquarters and we beat them back to cars via the road.
