  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Each participant must carry all food and equipment they will individually need for the 3 day trip. Foodwise, starting with Dinner on Day 1, this basically works out to 2 dinners, 2 lunches, and 2 breakfasts plus snacks and treats for the trip leader. Equipment includes the mandatory 10 essentials and any special or individual items you may need such as medications and fun stuff like binos for bird watchers and camera gear for photographers. I strongly recommend taking only what is essential as the lighter your pack the easier the walk and the more fun you will have. Group leader will carry an Obsidian group first aid kit but each person should also carry an individual kit as part of the ten essentials. Group leader will also carry a dining fly for sun and rain protection. I strongly recommend light-weight long sleeve shirt and pants for hiking plus sun hat and headnet which will help immeasurably to protect you against the sun and bugs. Also, campfires are banned and the only stoves allowed are canister types with an immediate shut-off. Group leader will send out a suggested equipment list prior to the trip. However, please ask if you have any questions or need suggestions on what gear or food to bring.

Trip Report

The happy hikers set out on this three-day tour of the Diamond Peak Wilderness on a clear warm afternoon from Trapper Creek trailhead at first walking through quiet forest along a mossey winding creek. A few miles and some elevation later, they reached Diamond View Lake with their first panoramic view of the peak above. The group sweated on and up through the late afternoon and were rewarded with a lovely tarn-side campsite in full view of the mountain and in time to watch the sun set strikingly behind its south summit.

Day two began with a clear sunrise and then a short hike over the PCT crest to scenic Marie Lake. The group camped at a comfortable breezy site just above the lake and spent the afternoon watching its deep colors change with the traveling sunlight.

On day three, the hikers started early and strong with some quick elevation gain up through open mature forest popping out onto a rocky point with sweeping views south over Summit Lake and Mt. Thielsen. From there, they traversed the alpine zone following the PCT north along Diamond Peak’s craggy east and north faces. The hikers walked rocky stunted forests, passed tarn and heather filled meadows and enjoyed deep views into central Oregon. After lunch and a nap, they continued north to the pyramid tower of Mt. Yoran where they left the PCT and descended past several more scenic lakes concluding with a refreshing ford of Trapper Creek to the trailhead.
