Description:

This pleasant fall hike passes through part of the old Taylor Burn area, but there is a lot of regrowth to accompany the improved views of lakes and mountains. The hike begins near North Waldo Campground. After about 1.7 miles, we will turn north to follow a loop around Rigdon Butte and the 3 lakes. Lake Kiwa is a possible lunch spot. There may be time for a quick swim in Waldo Lake on the return leg of our hike. If the skies permit, we will have good views of Diamond Peak, the Twins, Mt. Fuji, and possibly Mt. Jefferson. Perhaps we will find a few last, ripe huckleberries. Pace will be steady and relaxed. We will follow current COVID-19 guidelines. There should be enough parking for multiple cars. You may wish to make any carpooling arrangements privately ahead of time.

Trip Report

There were so many great things about this hike that it is hard to mention all of them. The congenial group and enjoyable conversation really made for a wonderful day! The weather included a good mix of sun, clouds, light breeze, and minimal smoke. We had good views of Diamond Peak and Waldo Lake from the trail, of Upper Rigdon Lake from our snack spot, and of Kiwa Lake from our lunch on a rocky point. One person enjoyed wading in the lake after lunch. The group deftly maneuvered over and around some large logs on the lakes portion of the trail. On the return trail, we were amazed by the sudden plunge back into the forest at the boundary of the old burn. We enjoyed talking about the history of the area and explored the outlet to Waldo Lake that is the start of the North Fork Middle Fork of the Willamette River. We inspected fireweed seed pods and drying pearly everlasting flowers. Trees and shrubs included mountain hemlock, lodgepole pine, fir, golden chinquapin and willow. A highlight of the trip was the great horned owl near Kiwa Lake that flushed from a perch overhead and landed in a nearby snag, well within our view. No woodpeckers this day, but there was at least one pair of mountain bluebirds. And did I mention the wonderful group of hikers? Thanks to all for a great day!
