Trip Report

Did people sign up for the swifts or for the ice cream? Gathering at an open space at Washburne Park at 5:30pm, our loop included the Masonic Cemetery, Ribbon Trail, the new Lodge fence, and Hendricks Park. While waiting by the bathroom, Rick spotted the swifts flying over the park and gave an informative "swift" overview. We made a swift descent to the playground in back of Prince Pucklers just in time for our planned 7:30 viewing of the Vaux's swifts circling and diving into the Agate chimney. It was a balmy evening, perfect for viewing and waiting in a long line for ice cream or other nearby treats. Later Rick talked with Barbara Coombs who counted about 8,700 birds and said that now was the peak of the migration in Eugene. Rick suggested if you want to view other chimneys on the West Coast, check out this site: www.vauxhappening.org/na-sb-2020.html Our phone flashlights were helpful in walking back on uneven sidewalks to our cars.
