Description:

This is a good first-of-the-season trip for intermediate skiers (it's really not appropriate for beginners). We'll plan on heading up to Midnight Lake via the PCT, then following the trail through the woods over to the road past Bechtel Shelter, for a nice glide back to Pengra Pass and then the parking lot. Lunch will be at either Midnight Lake or at Bechtel Shelter. Depending on conditions, it could turn into an out-and-back instead of a loop (for instance, if it's icy under the trees). Trip will be cancelled or re-scheduled if snow conditions are inadequate.

Trip Report

Despite reliable reports of icy ski conditions, seven intrepid Obsidians left Eugene in the fog to head up to Gold Lake Sno-Park. We weren't sure whether it was reassuring, or a bad omen, that a group of Ski Patrol people was in the parking lot training for emergency rescues, but we headed off down the trail to Pengra Pass. Conditions really didn't seem as bad as anticipated, so we decided to continue the planned loop route to Midnight Lake. Skiing up the PCT was a bit of a struggle (and the Ski Patrol could surely have put their new skills to use if we had tried to ski DOWN the PCT), but we made it up to the Midnight Lake Tie Trail junction. Recalling how fast and tricky the little spur back from Midnight Lake can be, we decided we didn't really need to see the lake. Instead, we ate lunch next to a little unnamed lake we dubbed "Mid-Morning Lake", and soaked up the warm sunshine. We then made our way through the woods down to Abernethy Road, leaving a trail of sitzmarks along the way. From there, it was an uneventful ski down the road, though the surface was surprisingly erratic and tricky even though it wasn't icy. All in all, it was a great day, with dazzling blue skies and lots of sunshine making up for somewhat suboptimal skiing conditions.
