Description:

This hike is dedicated to Amanda, a Coos woman who was forcibly marched to a reservation far from her homeland on Oregon's Trail of Tears.

The full trail, from the south side of Yachats to the Cape Perpetua Whispering Trail Rock Shelter, is 7.6 miles out and back. We'll be starting our journey with the Ya'Xaik Trail to the north of Yachats, adding an additional 1.1 miles. This hike may turn out to be shorter however, because of intermittent closures of the trail from the Amanda statue leading to Cape Perpetua. We'll find out. It will be a day of history, flora and fungi.

Participants and others who are interested will be invited to participate in a readers' theater rendition of 'Amanda Transcending', a play by Connie Bennett that explores the sad story of the Coos people's forced exile from their homeland.

Trip Report

We started our day on the north side of Yachats in the dense and dripping rain forest of the Ya'Xaik Trail and Gerdemann Preserve, vowing to return in spring when the gigantic Himalayan rhododendrons are in bloom. Then we drove to the south side of Yachats to pick up the Oregon Coast Trail, which took us across Hwy 101 and onto the Amanda Trail. Alas! The Amanda gathering place is closed for some kind of construction or repair. We were disappointed that we couldn't get close to the site honoring Amanda's heartbreaking memory, but the day was still a good opportunity to learn more about this shameful chapter in Oregon's history.

And, it was a beautiful day for a picnic at Strawberry Hill, where we watched seals playing in the surf. We also saw a very charming miniature but fully operational lighthouse, a huge ancient Grandmother Sitka Spruce, and some of us say they saw an elk.
