  • Start date: 01/08/2022

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

Description:

Note new meeting place: Jerry's Home Improvement Center, Hwy 99 and Beltline, area of parking lot to RIGHT of entrance on highway side.

We'll walk north from the Nye Beach turnaround along the beach to Yaquina Head (3.6 miles). According to my back o' the envelope calculations, we should reach the tide pools at the Yaquina Head Marine Garden at 11:00, just as the tide is at its lowest. We'll stop there for some tide pooling, some lunch and some exploration of the lighthouse, before returning back along the beach. The tide will be coming in as we walk back, so we'll be on the lookout for sneaker waves.

Since we don't want to miss the low tide, please be ready to leave at 7:30 because we won't be able to wait!

Trip Report

Kudos to this great group of hikers who actually managed to hit the road a full two minutes early! We got to the tide pools at Yaquina Head right at low tide, and were treated to closeups of a heron, green anemones, sea stars, a few urchins and oodles and oodles of mussels – also some seals snoozing on the rocks. By the time we had eaten our lunch at the lighthouse, the coast was clear, the sun was out and many of us even strolled back barefoot. We were surprised by a hang glider making a dramatic landing right at our feet, got buzzed by a hummingbird, and saw a rainbow over the ocean. Everyone finished with a big smile for this magical winter day at the coast.
