Description:

We will ski from the Waldo Road Sno-Park, 10 miles round trip to Birthday Lake 1500' in the Waldo Lake Wilderness. There may be difficult trailbreaking involved if we have had fresh snow, or challenging downhill on return if the snowpack is old and packed. The first 1.5 or 2 miles is on the Waldo Road, where snowmobiles usually pack down a trail.

Trip Report

When our group reached the Waldo Road sno-park we were the only people there, and happy to not be starting from a crowded Gold Lake. The snow was icy until almost noon, and so the beginning of the trail up toward Birthday Lake from the Waldo Road was rough and uneven. Doug's climbing skins required repair, and then broke down altogether. Thanks to John for loaning him a pair of kicker skins, and me another. Instead of an out-and-back to Birthday Lake, we chose to take the trail west to Fuji Mountain shelter, and then descend the road to Salt Creek Falls, rather than come back down the narrow uneven route we had climbed up. Snow conditions were excellent at mid-day, and we eagerly followed the blue diamonds on a rather flat, open trail none of us had skied before. Bright sun and calm air then turned the south facing slope slushy and the descent was fast but unsteady. After six hours skiing, three waited by highway 58, and two drivers walked back to our cars. We could have left a shuttle car at the snow play area, and so for next time this could be a fun loop on a day with some fresh snow.
