.This is a road trip. The road I checked out was packed and groomed for snowmobiles. Went on a week day, no snowmobiles. The road travels around the base of Little Nash Crater. About 2 miles into trip there is a good lunch spot with a great view of 3 Fingered Jack and Maxwell Butte. There are xc-ski trails that branch off the road. I was on snow shoes and took one of these trail back to parking lot. This is a group trip we all will be on the road. When we turn back we may take a different course.

Trip Report

This was a day that truly enjoyed by all participants. It had a few challenges but all was handled with humor. We were a little late out of the parking lot. This was to our advantage as far as the snow was concerned more time to soften up. 3 skiers and 2 snowshoers started up the road about 11:30. We had a couple of folks getting reacquainted with their ski’s the frozen snow was of little help to them. One who has been skiing all winter no problem. 2 on snowshoes who just crunched along. We had great views of 3 Fingered Jack, Maxwell Butte and Coffin Mt. We all settled in for lunch with greats views all the mountains. By now it is around 1pm the snow is mushy and most are ready to start back to cars.. One continues on for another 15 minutes the rest of use start back down the road for the long down run back to the cars. No problem for the snowshoe folk. After 3 miles, everyone is doing better on their ski’s. Someone pulls out his excellent downhill skills making big snowplow turns takes off. Snowplowing when you have not done it in awhile turns your legs to noodles you fall in the shade on the frozen snow and break a pole. Enough of skiing, put ski’s on pack and join the snowshoers. The all winter gal comes storming past in perfect snowplow position and a big grin. We all meet up at the final junction to the cars only to find out snowplow gal has had the sole delaminate off the entire length of one of her boots. We all decided the most dangerous part of the trip is the parking with its 1 inch of ice. We had 2 slow motion falls before we were safe in the cars.
