Description:

This quiet wander through the flatland past the quonset hut will eventually take us to the river. We will listen for bird song and look for spring shoots. If people want, we can explore the trails through the woods above and around the arboretum, which would include some elevation and additional mileage.

Trip Report

The fog had burned off so we enjoyed a relaxing walk in the sun under bright, blue skies. Across the fields we could see tree branches beginning to add different colors to the landscape. Along one part of the river bank, we saw the results of beaver activity. Three trees growing closely together, each with diameters of over a foot, had all the bark chewed off two feet up the trunks. A bit farther we saw another tree, this one all by itself with an even larger diameter, chewed well into the middle of the tree. We'll have to go back in a few months to monitor the beaver progress and see which way the trees might fall. We enjoyed seeing a waterlily pond that will not be visible once things leaf out. Since it was National Peppermint Patty Day, Kay brought treats to share.
