Description:

When crossing the bridge into the park at Mt. Pisgah immediately turn left and go a quarter mile to the North Trailhead Parking Area where we will meet at 9:30 am for a short introduction.
We will walk a quarter of a mile through the forest identifying plants along the trail to the Nursery. At the Nursery we will visit the plant beds where dozens of species are grown for cuttings or to harvest seeds. There will be opportunity to talk with the staff members and volunteers. We will visit the greenhouse where seedlings are grown. After this there is a tour of the buildings where records are kept and seeds are packaged and put into cold storage. The original nursery at the Kienzle House garden plot is nearby for a quick visit.
The walking is easy and the tour will be over by noon.

Trip Report

This was the second tour conducted by Friends of Buford Park (FBP) this spring for the Obsidians. Our group of 6 met at the parking area for a short walk through the woods, identifying plants on our way to the gate of the FBP native plant nursery. Inside the fenced area yellow-flowering balsam root, Oregon sunshine and tar weed were in full bloom. The bed of deep-purple delphinium put on a stunning display. We had a brief talk with Mieko Aoki, the nursery manager and April Dawn the assistant manager. Jered Tarr, the FBP volunteer coordinator, answered questions about the organization. We toured the room where seeds are separated from chaff and then placed into cold storage. More than 50 kinds of seeds are harvested at the nursery. These are used in habitat restoration work at Mt. Pisgah. Some of the seeds are sold to other organizations doing similar work.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the FBP nursery should contact Jered Tarr, volunteer@bufordpark.org . Other FBP work parties do restoration work in the fields around Mt. Pisgah.
