Trip Report

The planned Pat’s Cabin hike was changed to Mill Creek Wilderness trail near Prineville. To reach Pat’s Cabin trailhead, one first has to cross Bridge Creek. Ironically, the bridge no longer spans the creek but rests uselessly on the bank. Fording the creek was out of the question as it was waist deep and cold. Thank the beavers for this as their dams were everywhere altering the streamflow in a positive fashion.
Instead, several participants agreed to hike Mill Creek trail. Mill Creek was high, as well, due to April rainfall in the Ochocos. We managed 3.2 miles round trip and were impressed by the beauty of the Ponderosa forested canyon. This would be a good early summer hike for wildflowers and more fordable stream crossings. Also, Wild Cat Campground, where the trail begins, was a well managed Forest Service gem. A good base for some local hikes.
