Description:

This hike will be moderately paced 2-3mph. The terrain is hilly and a combination of old farming roads and new trails. We will begin at the end of Panorama Drive dropping down on a lesser used trail to a road that leads to a path which features a gazebo overlooking Mary's Peak and some interesting carved wooden chairs from tree stumps. A short snack break will be taken before we will proceed to a path along the Mary's river. We climb after leaving the river working our way to Fitton Green. Before reaching the top we will take a longer lunch break with a view of the coastal range. The gradual climb to the top will have views of the Cascades if weather permits. Time can be spent on top enjoying the view. A short jaunt will return us to our cars. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking spaces.

Trip Report

Eight Obsidian's and six guests made their way to Fitton Green Natural Area outside of Corvallis. This area is adjoined by the Crestmont and Bald Hill Farm land trusts making for a beautiful combination of Oak Savannah, a path along the Mary's River and views of the Cascades. Although it was a very pleasant hiking day high clouds covered the top part of Mary's Peak to the West and the tallest Cascade peaks to the east. Everyone was inspired to return to this enchanting area so close to Eugene. The combination of paths covered with hard packed small gravel and well maintained old farming roads provides a comfortable hiking surface. Their were informative map boards at the main intersections guiding hikers to the many choices of pathways. Our 6 mile hike did a figure eight and included 900 ft. of elevation gain on rolling hills. There were open grassy meadows that added variety to the forest trees with excellent views to the west, east and south. The drive to the Panorama Drive trailhead is only an hour and 10 minutes from Eugene and one can choose beautiful routes like Peoria road to reach the trailhead.
